  • Penguin 2 on May 26, 2012 (Data refresh): Setup a form for those webmasters who believe they had been affected by Penguin 1 mistakenly.

  • Penguin 3 on October 5, 2012 (Data refresh): Parallel to affecting English queries ~0.3%, it worked also for Spanish ~0.4%, Italian ~0.3% and 0.4% of French queries.

  • Penguin 4 (AKA Penguin 2.0) on May 22, 2013: Added a special spam report form for users to report spam sites.

  • Penguin 5 (AKA Penguin 2.1) on October 4 (Data refresh): Penguin 2.1 was just a data update of Penguin 2.0. Previously affected sites by Penguin 2.0 were recovered if they had taken steps to improvement.

  • Penguin 6 (AKA Penguin 3.0) on October 17, 2014: Penguin 3.0 helped sites recover from previous Penguin updates that fixed their link profile and It demoted sites that have a bad link profile.

  • Penguin 7 (AKA Penguin 4.0) on September 23, 2016: Google Penguin 4.0 is real time.

Google Penguin 4.0

After a long gap, 2 years (more previously 707 days), finally Google has released an update in Penguin Algorithm, called Google Penguin 4.0. According to Google Webmaster Central Blog:
With this change, Penguin's data is refreshed in real time, so changes will be visible much faster, typically taking effect shortly after we re-crawl and re-index a page. It also means we're not going to comment on future refreshes.
There is two main component of this release:

  • Google Penguin 4.0 is now real time.

  • Google Penguin 4.0 is now more granular.
Google's site ranking algorithm (Penguin) is now real-time, and it now treats pages on sites individually rather than treating (and presumably penalizing) the whole site.

Google Penguin 4.0 is more Granular

Gary Illyes more explained that:
Penguin now devalues spam by adjusting ranking based on spam signals, rather than affecting the ranking of the whole site. 
Google will now critically review the spammy page, not the whole site. It means, Penguin will not impact specific pages on the site, or may be the section, while remain pages will remain fine.

This is a hell of an achievement. I mean, your whole site will not get punished only the affected pages.

Google Penguin 4.0 is released for all languages and countries at the same time. Google said we now rolling out an update to the Penguin algorithm in all languages. Nobody can escape from Penguin now.

Glenn Gabe: 

  • Disavowing is no more required, confirmed by Google.

  • It's a bit earlier to discuss it, but if it is same as told by Google, there is something very interesting. As soon as someone tries to fool Google, the algorithm will adjust the ranking immediately.
